GPU

GPU, which stands for "Graphics Processing Unit," is a specialized electronic circuit designed with parallel processing capabilities to accelerate image creation and perform complex mathematical calculations. Therefore, to the question of what is a GPU; it can be defined as a high-performance hardware unit that, unlike traditional processors (CPUs), can process large amounts of data simultaneously (parallel processing). Originally developed for rendering 3D graphics, GPUs today play a critical role in intensive workloads such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Deep Learning, big data analytics, and High-Performance Computing (HPC).

What Does GPU Mean?

The question of what is a GPU, introduced in the opening section, can be technically defined as a type of processor that performs complex mathematical and geometric calculations much faster than a CPU, thanks to its architecture consisting of thousands of cores. At this point, the answer to the frequently asked question, is a GPU a graphics card, would be negative. While a graphics card is the entire hardware assembly including memory (VRAM), cooling systems, and the circuit board; the GPU is the processor chip located at the center of this card that performs the actual computation.

Where is the GPU Located?

The location of this component within the hardware architecture is as important as the definition of a GPU. A GPU is found as the primary processing chip at the center of the circuit board in discrete graphics cards, whereas in integrated systems, it resides on the same die as the Central Processing Unit (CPU).
