TOKENIZATION

In cybersecurity, Tokenization refers to the process of converting sensitive data into meaningless reference values; whereas in natural language processing (NLP), it is the process of breaking text into smaller, meaningful units such as words, syllables, numbers, characters, or symbols—namely tokens. Tokenization is an indispensable step in ensuring data security, particularly for organizations that process payment transactions and other sensitive information.

What Is Tokenization?

In natural language processing and artificial intelligence systems, Tokenization is the process of transforming a complete dataset into small, standardized components that align with machine logic and can be understood and processed by systems. In cybersecurity systems, Tokenization is a fundamental step used to protect sensitive data. For example, in payment systems, sensitive information such as a credit card number (PAN) is replaced with a meaningless “token” instead of the actual data. This method enhances data security and facilitates compliance with security standards such as PCI DSS. Although generated tokens are independent from one another, when the Format-Preserving Tokenization method is used, they can retain certain structural elements of the original data, such as length and format. As a result, business operations can continue uninterrupted through tokenization. Each token is securely mapped to its original value within a Token Vault. In the tokenization process, the token generation phase is carried out within the framework of data transformation, isolation of sensitive data from internal systems, operational use of tokens, and hosting of the original data in secure external storage environments.
